Pied Wagtail

You spring and dart on
a tarmac stage, a ballet dainty,
pleased to be so pretty.

Grace, perfect poise,
ease of motion, an excellence defined.
A dancer of poems

in leaps and pirouettes.
Admirer of a self possessed.
Each morsel picked, a tail of joy,

a curtsy made. Then, weightlessly,
legs a-blur, tail horizontal,
skim to a sudden stop.

At a distance
you’re a floater in the eye.
I spot you passing by, performer

for the blessed who see.
So fine a thing as you
gives hope to me.
