The End

You finish reading the book
and keep it from its nook
to say ‘goodbye, my lover,’
gazing at its cover
and savouring the smell.
The story ended well.
You’re sad but also pleased
it’s over and you’re eased
that life goes on:
a chapter has begun
now that it’s done,

pleased the author met
was born to tighten yet
the threads that bind
each heart and mind
that grope through time,
seeking a place to rest
in a quiet room with all that’s best
in each of us to endure
what only Death can cure
and fly with higher things
that reading brings
for books are wings
that help us flutter by
until we die.
