Winter’s Trees

The winter’s trees all seem
to root in fog in some
unfinished scene, silent
as the absent green; these
whose motion is to wait
like seaweed by the sea
for the tide’s return, wait
for leaves that will in turn
burn on compost pyres
making fog grow quicker
as each flame expires,
and then take root in calm,
deep in the foggy balm
that can’t disturb or please
the souls of winter’s trees.
