Backward Rats

The rat said: “There are stars;
I’ve seen them with my eyes.”
But this was not so wise:
the rest had weaker sight.

The rat that saw the stars
was disbelieved and killed
and eaten by his friends.
But who can see all ends?

  1. The verse reminded me of Galileo and his discovery that the earth revolves around the sun and his confrontation with the all powerful church of his day.

    Galileo was smart, he could mutter his belief under his breath. The rat in the verse obviously did not.

    1. It is a challenge we all fail at. I wrote a poem once about ants in a garden who are unaware of the existence of human beings – which, if you think about it, they’re not! In our own way, there are realities we cannot understand and never will until we evolve further. Thank you for your thoughtful comment and for taking the time.
